WASHINGTON — The American Academy of Pediatrics on Monday named Anthony S. Fauci, MD, FAAP, an honorary fellow for what it called his “decades of distinguished leadership, dedication, wisdom and service to children and families.”
The designation “represents the highest distinction [and] highest expression of gratitude by the academy,” AAP president Sandy Chung, MD, FAAP, said during a ceremony at the AAP National Conference & Exhibition.

Fauci, who stepped down as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases last December after nearly 40 years in the position, thanked the pediatricians in attendance for creating what he called a “reservoir of trust” for their patients and families.
“This is particularly important as vaccines and the concept of vaccination are under assault from a rather vocal group of individuals,” Fauci said.
“As you know, in the arena of misinformation and disinformation, I have turned out to be, unfortunately, a target,” he said. “But I always knew that you, the pediatricians in this country and throughout the world, always had my back. You have to know that I’ve always had your back, too.”
Fauci recently joined the faculty at Georgetown University as a distinguished university professor in the medical school’s division of infectious diseases, with an additional appointment in the university’s McCourt School of Public Policy.
