WASHINGTON — Preliminary study findings indicate that paternal postpartum depression may double the odds of a child experiencing three or more adverse childhood experiences before the age of 5 years.

The findings were reported by Kristine H. Schmitz, MD, a pediatrician and assistant professor of pediatrics at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and colleagues at the AAP National Conference & Exhibition.

“We hope to better understand the causes of fathers’ depression, the ways that fathers would like to engage in treatment of their depression, or other mental health concerns, as well as studying interventions and what does or doesn’t work for dads,” Schmitz says in the above video.
