BOSTON — The Infectious Diseases Society of America Foundation named Edsel Salvana, MD, DTM&H, FDCP, FIDSA, its sixth IDea Incubator Innovator of the year at IDWeek for portable HIV drug resistance testing.
According to Salvana, HIV drug resistance is an emerging concern that already affects roughly one in 10 people with HIV.
After building one of two HIV drug resistance labs in the Philippines, Salvana set out to create a test that can be deployed to resource-limited areas where labs are not readily available.
“I figured this is not an ideal way to treat HIV — without access to a lab — not just in the Philippines, but in a lot of places around the world,” Salvana said. “So, we came up with an innovation. It is a test that can be deployed even in areas that don’t have sophisticated laboratory facilities.”
