WHO and Germany open a new global center for pandemic and epidemic information

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Federal Republic of Germany will establish a new global hub for innovations in the areas of pandemic and epidemic, data, monitoring and analytics. The Berlin-based hub, which works with partners around the world, will lead innovations in data analytics across the largest network of global data to predict, prevent, detect, prepare for and respond to pandemic and epidemic risks worldwide.

The current Covid-19 pandemic has taught us that we can only fight pandemics and epidemics together. The new WHO hub will be a global platform for the prevention of pandemics and bring together various government, academic and private institutions. I am very pleased that WHO has chosen Berlin as its location and invites partners from all over the world to make a contribution to the WHO hub.

Federal Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel

The WHO Pandemic and Epidemic Information Hub is part of the WHO Health Emergencies Program and will be a new collaboration between countries and partners around the world that will drive innovation to improve the availability and connectivity of diverse data. Development of tools and predictive models for risk analysis; and for monitoring measures to combat epidemics, for acceptance in the community and for information demos. It is critical that the WHO hub provide intelligence to the work of public health experts and policy makers in all countries so that they can make quick decisions to prevent and respond to future public health emergencies.

Working with partners at global level, the WHO hub will expand innovation for existing forecasting and early warning capabilities in WHO and Member States. At the same time, the WHO hub will accelerate global collaboration between public and private sector organizations, academia and international partner networks. It will help them work together and help create the tools necessary to manage and analyze data for early warning monitoring. It will also encourage better access to data and information.
