The White House announced a rollout plan to vaccinate children ages 5-11 against COVID-19, should the FDA approve the use of the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine in that age group.

“We know millions of parents have been waiting for the COVID-19 vaccine for children in this age group,” said the White House coronavirus response coordinator Jeff Zients said during a press conference on Wednesday morning.

The FDA’s Advisory Committee on Vaccines and Related Biological Products (VRBPAC) will meet on October 26 to discuss Pfizer and BioNTech’s application for emergency approval of the vaccine in children ages 5-11. If the VRBPAC votes in favor of recommending the vaccine for children in this age group and the FDA issues an EEA, the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices will meet to make federal recommendations, which is expected to occur during a two-day meeting on Nov. 11th and 3rd.

The White House said it had made enough vaccines available to vaccinate the country’s 28 million children, ages 5-11.

“If the FDA and CDC approve the vaccine, we are ready to get firearms,” said Zients. “Children have different needs than adults, and our resource planning is geared towards meeting those specific needs, including by offering vaccinations in environments that parents and children are familiar with and trust.”

The scheme proposed by Pfizer for children ages 5-11 consists of two syringes 21 days apart – the same scheme as used in older age groups. The dose would be lower, however – two 10 µg shots.

“Once the vaccine is approved by the FDA, we will ship millions of doses across the country,” said Zients.

He said the introduction will extend beyond pharmacies and doctor’s offices.

“To make vaccinating children even more convenient, we will be working with state and local education providers to bring vaccination clinics directly into schools, including coordinating pharmacies and other vaccine providers with school districts to set up clinics on site,” said Zients .

He said they would “deliver vaccines to pediatricians, pharmacies, community health centers and rural health centers, work with children’s hospitals to host vaccination sites, including nights and weekends, help schools get up to vaccination clinics, and use mobile clinics to meet families there.” where they live. “

“We will ensure that vaccinations for children ages 5-11 are simple, convenient and accessible to every family,” said Zients.

US surgeon general Vivek H. Murthy, MD, MBA, described a public information campaign that would accompany the introduction of the vaccine.

“We are preparing a national public awareness campaign to collect parents with information about the vaccines where they are,” Murthy said during the briefing. “We will work with schools to send letters home to parents [and] will convene doctors and clinics and support them in carrying out vaccinations as soon as they have discussions with the families. “

Murthy also begged the parents to get vaccinated.

“We need everyone on board for the work ahead of us because all parents should have the information and tools they need to protect their children and the children under 5 who cannot be vaccinated yet,” said Murthy. “We want parents to know we share this goal, so we have been excitedly awaiting the FDA’s review of the child vaccine data.”

Children ages 12-17 are already eligible for the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine, which remains the only COVID-19 vaccine for children in the United States

“We have many reasons to hope that the same vaccine technology has been shown to be very effective in adults and adolescents,” said Murthy. “It has been carefully tested over the course of months, and now we’ve got the best scientists in our country to carefully review the data on its safety and effectiveness. We all hope that this process will culminate with the option to vaccinate our children ages 5-11.

AAP President Lee Savio Beers, MD, said in a statement that the organization “look”[ed] look forward to working with the administration “in administering the vaccine“ without barriers ”.

“Parents trust us to care for their children, come to us with questions and concerns about how to stay healthy and safe, and will reach out to us in this next phase to inquire about the COVID-19 Vaccine to reassure and advise, “Beers said. “We are ready to do what we have always done: advise our families and protect our patients.
