New Delhi: Visceral fat is not the same as normal body fat – instead, it accumulates in the abdominal cavity around vital organs. This form of fat is strongly linked to an increased risk of heart disease – chronic and potentially fatal – but what makes it even more risky is that visceral fat can sometimes be present even in lean people – meaning not all seemingly fit people necessarily be free from it. Experts have long emphasized the importance of eating a healthy, balanced diet to shed that fat — and now a new study has revealed how a specific spice can effectively start working on it in just a few weeks.

Can Spices Melt Belly Fat?

As published in Nutrients magazine, cardamom (Elaichi) can help get rid of fat that accumulates in the abdominal region. Available in green and black varieties, cardamom is used in Indian desserts, chai tea lattes and also for medicinal purposes. Dry pods of this spice are rich in phenolic acids, sterols and essential oils.

In this study, conducted on rodents fed a high-carbohydrate and high-fat diet that led to visceral obesity and impaired glucose tolerance over a period of eight weeks, experts compared the responses of the heart, metabolism and liver to black and green cardamom. They discovered that adding black cardamom to the diet can improve signs of metabolic syndrome more effectively than green cardamom. Green cardamom, on the other hand, can deteriorate heart and liver structure.

Experts attribute cardamom’s visceral fat-lowering effects to the terpenes contained in the spice. Experts discovered that black cardamom reduced body fat mass, plasma triglycerides, systolic blood pressure, liver and heart function and structure. At the same time, rodents given green cardamom showed increases in body fat, heart and liver damage, and increased visceral obesity. Also, they showed no improvement in metabolic syndrome.

Green VS Black: Which Cardamom Variety Is Better?

In conclusion, the researchers found that black cardamom is more effective than green cardamom in metabolic syndrome. Cardamom was also once thought to be a diuretic and digestive stimulant that helps burn more fat and reduce water retention.

In addition, cardamom can treat indigestion and promote weight loss. Health authorities emphasize soaking cardamom pods overnight and drinking this water two or three times a day for maximum benefits. According to Harvard Health, combine this with 30 minutes of exercise every day to burn belly fat.
