The UK Performance Nutrition and Body Composition Laboratory will be opened to the public
LEXINGTON, Kentucky (July 30, 2021) – Kentuckers can better understand their health through the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment’s Performance Nutrition and Body Composition Lab.
The Department of Dietetics and Human Nutrition recently opened its research laboratory to the public. The facility includes a Bod Pod, which rates body composition for lean muscle mass and body fat, and a Quark Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) system, which measures the number of calories a person burns at rest.
“We want to empower Kentucking residents to better understand some key health metrics,” said Tammy Stephenson, division manager. “Higher body fat percentages and less lean body mass can increase a person’s risk for chronic health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.”
Faculty faculties and PhD students oversee the activities of the laboratory, and UK professors will continue to operate the laboratory for research purposes.
Individuals can make an appointment on the laboratory’s website. The Bod Pod test takes less than 10 minutes and the RMR test takes 30-45 minutes. Customers receive the test results at the time of their appointment. Then, on the laboratory’s website, clients can watch videos created by the faculty departments who are registered dietitians. These videos explain more about the tests and provide additional information on how to interpret the test results.
UK faculty, staff, and student discounts are available, as well as anyone wanting to do both assessments. Dates in the evening, on the weekend, in the early morning and during the day are available on the laboratory’s website: https://performancenutritionlab.ca.uky.edu/. The laboratory has free parking outside the Funkhouser building on the UK campus for the convenience of its customers.
