The benefits of COVID-19 vaccination outweigh the risks despite the possibility of heart-related complications such as myocarditis, the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association announced in a statement.
Recently, the CDC announced that it is monitoring the vaccine adverse event reporting system and vaccination safety data link for cases of young adults developing myocarditis after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine manufactured by Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna have received.

As Healio previously reported, the cases appear to be predominant in adolescents and young adults; more common in men versus women; after the second dose of vaccine against the first; and typically within 4 days of vaccination.

The AHA / ASA statement was drawn up by Mitchell SV Elkind, M.D, M.S., FAHA, FAAN, President of the AHA; Robert A. Harrington, M.D., FAHA, immediate past president of AHA; Donald M. Lloyd-Jones, M.D., ScM, FAHA, President-elect of AHA; Mariell Jessup, MD, FAHA, Scientific and Medical Director of the AHA; and Eduardo Sanchez, MD, MPH, FAAFP, Chief Medical Officer for AHA Prevention.
Robert A. Harrington
“We urge all US adults and children 12 years and older to receive a COVID vaccine as soon as they can, as recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration and the CDC. The evidence continues to show that the COVID-19 vaccines are nearly 100% effective in preventing death and hospitalization from COVID-19 infection, ”the authors wrote.
Donald M. Lloyd-Jones
“We commend the CDC’s continued monitoring for adverse events related to the COVID-19 vaccines … and demonstrate that any health event that may be related to a COVID-19 vaccine is handled transparently and reliably. The few cases of myocarditis reported after the COVID-19 vaccination are being investigated. However, myocarditis is usually the result of a viral infection and it remains to be determined whether these cases correlate with receiving a COVID-19 vaccine, especially since the US-approved COVID-19 vaccines do not contain live virus, “they wrote.
Mariell Jessup
“We remain confident that the benefits of vaccination far outweigh the very small, rare risks. The risk of vaccination is also far less than the risk of COVID-19 infection itself, including the potentially fatal consequences and the potential long-term health effects that may still show up, including myocarditis. The vaccination recommendation specifically includes people with cardiovascular risk factors such as high blood pressure, obesity and type 2 diabetes, people with heart disease, and survivors of heart attacks and strokes, as they are at a much higher risk of an undesirable result of the COVID-19 virus than they are from the vaccine “Wrote the authors.
Eduardo Sanchez
The associations also support the CDC’s recommendation to relax mask and social distancing restrictions on those who have been vaccinated, the statement said.
