New York state recorded the highest number of new Covid cases in the entire pandemic in a single day, topping just over 21,000 new infections on Thursday, Governor Kathy Hochul said.

About 8% of all Covid tests were positive, almost twice as many as a few days ago, according to the state health department.

“The winter increase in COVID-19 cases is a reminder that the pandemic is not over yet and that we must take special care to protect ourselves and each other,” said Hochul in a press release on Friday.

The latest report comes as the US battles rising cases caused by the Covid Delta variant as the newly discovered Omicron variant spreads rapidly. Omicron accounted for 13.1% of all Covid cases in the New York and New Jersey area last week, according to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention.

Health authorities urge people to get vaccinated and have a booster vaccination as soon as they are eligible. Data shows that vaccinated people with a booster are better protected against variants of Covid than those who received just one of the Johnson & Johnson vaccinations or two of the vaccine doses from Moderna and Pfizer and BioNTech.

In New York, more than 129,000 vaccine doses were administered on Thursday, the state said.

Covid outbreaks canceled live performances in New York this week, such as the Rockette’s “Christmas Spectacular” at Radio City Music Hall and “Moulin Rouge! The Musical “on Broadway.
