Johnson & Johnson confirmed that a batch of the COVID-19 vaccine was discarded following a mishap at a manufacturing facility.
According to the company, during a quality check at an Emergent Biosolutions manufacturing facility in Baltimore, “a batch of drug substances that did not meet quality standards was identified”. The company said the site has not yet been approved to manufacture drugs for the vaccine.

“This batch was never developed further through to the filling and finishing phase of our manufacturing process,” says a press release.
The drug company didn’t say how many doses of the vaccine were affected, but the New York Times reported that the total batch destroyed totaled 15 million doses.
Johnson & Johnson said it had achieved its goal of delivering more than 20 million doses of its one-shot vaccine in the United States by the end of March. It has committed to deliver 100 million cans by the end of June. Despite the calamity, the company plans to sell an additional 24 million cans by April.
“Quality and safety remain our top priorities,” said Johnson & Johnson. “As we continue to work with the FDA and Emergent to approve the Emergent Bayview Facility for emergencies, Johnson & Johnson is providing additional manufacturing, technical operations, and quality experts who will be on-site at Emergent to oversee and oversee and to support the entire manufacture of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine. “
The FDA did not immediately respond to Healio’s request for comment.
