HealthDay News – According to a study published online May 21 on JAMA Network Open, long-term gluten intake in middle-aged women without celiac disease is not associated with cognitive levels.

Yiqing Wang, Ph.D., of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and colleagues studied whether gluten intake is linked to cognitive function in women without celiac disease. The analysis included 13,494 women who participated in the Nurses’ Health Study II with nutritional ratings from 1991 to 2015 and cognitive ratings from 2014 to 2019.

The researchers found that when comparing the highest and lowest quintiles (psychomotor speed and attention: P for trend = 0.22; learning and working memory) after checking the demographic and lifestyle risk factors, there were no significant differences in the standardized cognitive scores according to the quintile gluten intake: P for trend = 0.30, global cognition: P for trend = 0.78). Even with further adjustments to include important gluten sources in the diet (e.g. refined cereals or whole grain products), comparing the decile categories of gluten intake, using the gluten intake updated with each previous questionnaire cycle, or modeling changes in gluten intake, the zero associations remained.

“Our results do not support the recommendations to limit gluten in the diet in order to maintain cognitive function without celiac disease or demonstrated gluten sensitivity,” the authors conclude.

Several authors reported financial ties to the pharmaceutical and publishing industries.
