In a new guide, the CDC said Monday that fully vaccinated people can gather indoors with other fully vaccinated people without wearing masks or staying 6 feet apart.

CDC director Rochelle Walensky, MD, introduced the first guidelines for people who are considered fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

For the purposes of the guidelines, the CDC said that a person is considered fully vaccinated if they received their final vaccine dose for any of the three approved vaccines – the Pfizer BioNTech or Moderna two-dose vaccines or the single dose – at least two weeks ago – Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

“It is important to note that this is an initial guide,” Walensky said during a press conference. “The science of COVID-19 is complex and our understanding of the virus is evolving at a rapid pace. The recommendations issued today are only a first step. As more people get vaccinated and the science and evidence increase and the disease dynamics of this country change, we will keep updating these guidelines. “

Walensky said that all individuals, whether vaccinated or not, should continue to practice proper mask use and social distancing in public, as well as avoid medium to large gatherings.

Otherwise, according to the new guidelines, fully vaccinated individuals can visit other fully vaccinated individuals in small indoor gatherings without the need to use masks or social distancing. In addition, those who are fully vaccinated can “visit unvaccinated people from another household indoors without wearing masks or staying 6 feet apart when everyone in the other household is at low risk of serious illness”.

“For example, fully vaccinated grandparents can go into the house with their unvaccinated healthy daughter and their healthy children without masks or physical distance, provided none of the unvaccinated family members are at serious risk of COVID-19,” the instructions say.

When vaccinated individuals visit unvaccinated individuals who are at high risk of severe COVID-19, “All participants should take precautions, including wearing a well-fitting mask, being at least 6 feet away from others, and visiting outdoors or in one well ventilated room ”. the CDC said.

The new guidelines also state that fully vaccinated individuals do not need to be quarantined or tested after exposure if they do not have symptoms of COVID-19.

Walensky said that while recent data show the pandemic remains a “very serious situation”, it is hopeful.

Currently, nearly 59 million Americans have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, and nearly 31 million people – or 9.2% of the population – are fully vaccinated, according to CDC tracking, which puts the country “on a strong path at a later date.” brings end this pandemic, ”said Walensky.
