IDWeek organizers announced that the 2021 meeting will be fully virtual again due to the ongoing COVID-19 presence and restrictions.

The announcement was made on Friday by the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the HIV Medicine Association, the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, and the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists.

It is the second year in a row that the conference will be a fully virtual event. It is scheduled for September 29th through October 3rd and would have taken place in San Diego.

“The uncertainty about the availability of the convention center with the announcement that it will be used for immigrant accommodation, as well as ongoing concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic, including the increasing recognition of variants, will clearly prevent attendees from traveling to the meeting” Said the editor of the Infectious Disease News Carlos del Rio, MD, the IDSA Vice President and Executive Associate Dean at Emory University School of Medicine.

The organizers plan to implement more ways to connect with attendees, speakers and presenters through a “robust platform for learning, collaboration and networking” that will build on the success of the 2020 virtual conference, which it claims has more than 10,500 participants from all over the world participated.
