Hyperuricemia and gout do not increase the overall risk of dementia, but according to a recent meta-analysis they could be associated with a reduced likelihood of Alzheimer’s disease.

In an analysis of the pooled data from 4 cohort studies, the researchers found no significant difference in the risk of dementia between patients with hyperuricemia or gout and those who did not have any of these diseases. However, hyperuricemia and gout were significantly associated with a 22% lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease, reported Shu-Yue Pan, MD, and colleagues from Sichuan University’s West China Hospital in Chengdu, Sichuan, China in BMJ Open.

Previous studies examining the link between hyperuricemia and gout and dementia have produced mixed results. A study published in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases showed that the highest vs. uric acid levels and Alzheimer’s disease. However, in a study published in Arthritis Research & Therapy, researchers found that gout was significantly associated with a 24% and 23% reduced risk of vascular and non-vascular dementia, respectively.

“Dementia has variable clinical symptoms, multiple subtypes, and complex pathogenesis, which could explain the conflicting results of studies on gout or hyperuricemia,” noted Dr. Pan and colleagues.
