According to the results of studies on AIDS, HPV infection was associated with an up to 2.6-fold increased risk of HIV infection in women in sub-Saharan Africa.
The results suggest that increasing HPV vaccination could potentially reduce HIV incidence, the researchers said.

“There was inconclusive, mostly associative, data suggesting a link between HPV infection and subsequent HIV acquisition, but identifying a temporal relationship has been challenging – largely because genital HPV infections are so common and so are Can be difficult to pinpoint exactly when they will be acquired (very unlike HIV), ”member of the editorial board of Infectious Diseases News Jeanne M. Marrazzo, MD, MPH, FACP, FIDSA, Director of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Endowed Professorship in Infectious Diseases at the University of Alabama at the Birmingham School of Medicine, Healio said.
Marrazzo and colleagues examined data from MTN-003, a clinical case-control study of HIV chemoprophylaxis in cisgender women in sub-Saharan Africa that compared 138 HIV-infected women with 412 HIV-negative controls. Cervicovaginal swabs collected within 6 months prior to HIV seroconversion were used to assess the association between HPV infection and HIV acquisition.

Overall, HPV was found in 84% of HIV-infected women – high-risk types were found in 74% of women and low-risk types were found in 66%. Among the controls, the prevalence was 65%, 55% and 48%, respectively. Infection with two or more types of HPV was common in women who had acquired HIV (67%) and controls (49%), as was infections with 9-valent vaccine types (60% and 42%), the researchers reported.
The study showed that the likelihood of HIV infection in each HPV type (adjusted OR = 2.5; 95% CI 1.3–4.7), high-risk HPV types (aOR = 2.6; 95% % CI 1.5-4.6) and lower. increased risk HPV types (aOR = 1.8; 95%, CI 1.1-2.9). In addition, each other type found a 20% increased risk of HIV (aOR = 1.2; 95% CI, 1.1-1.4), reported Marrazzo and colleagues.
The study also showed that HIV acquisition was associated with HPV types by the 9-valent (aOR = 2.1; 95% CI, 1.3-3.6) and quadrivalent vaccines (aOR = 1 , 9; 95% CI, 1.1-3.2) were targeted.
Marrazzo said the results highlighted the numerous benefits of getting HPV vaccination before starting sexual activity.
