Why is the patient receiving levofloxacin?

The fact that I found myself always asking this question first when working up my patients is what started me on my journey into infectious diseases and antimicrobial stewardship.

While I was a PGY-1 pharmacy resident at Mercy Medical Center-Des Moines, it was my first rotation in ID with Dr. Jeff Brock that began my interest. I knew I was hooked when on non-ID rotations I would find myself focusing mostly on why the patient was on antibiotics and their infectious disease. This led me to pursue a PGY-2 in ID at HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Illinois, with Dr. scott bergman, where I continued to become more hooked with each interesting case I saw and the continued passion to ensure antibiotics were being given when only truly necessary.

I had seen only the tip of the iceberg in my training and continue every day to learn more with each patient and appreciate that it is unpredictable what each day will bring. This continued growth is furthered by the fact that ID and antimicrobial stewardship are a team sport and a true community that includes collaboration between ID physicians, microbiologists, infection preventionists, other pharmacists and so many more, leading to enhanced patient care and my own learning.
