FDA Facilitates Storage Rules for Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine

HealthDay News – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has announced new post-thaw retention rules for the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine that will make it easier to transport and dispense the cans.

The FDA now says that once thawed at temperatures of around -94 degrees Fahrenheit, the vaccine vials can be stored in a regular refrigerator for up to a month instead of five days, the Washington Post reported.

The new guidance means that experts say the vaccine can be used in more places that don’t have ultra-cold storage facilities.

“The wide availability of COVID-19 vaccines is key to vaccinating people and ending the pandemic,” Peter Marks, director of the FDA’s Center for Biological Research and Evaluation, told The Post. “This change should make the vaccine more widely available to the American public by allowing vaccine providers such as community doctors to obtain, store, and deliver the vaccine.”
