The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has completed its investigation of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine and has declared it safe.

The EMA, when reviewing the evidence, found no link between the vaccine and thromboembolism or blood clots, although the agency could not completely rule this out.

“This is a safe and effective vaccine,” said the executive director of the EMA Emer Cooke said during a press conference. “The benefits of protecting people from COVID-19, with the associated risks of death and hospitalization, outweigh the potential risks.”

Denmark and Norway stopped introducing the vaccine after reports of blood clots in vaccines, one of which was fatal. Other European countries, including Germany, France and Ireland, paused their vaccine launches later in the week despite criticism from experts and an EMA statement that there was “no evidence” that the vaccine was responsible for the clots .

The EMA is initiating additional research on rare events such as coagulation in vaccines and will also conduct targeted observational studies.
