Dozens of other societies and organizations representing medical workers have advocated compulsory COVID-19 vaccination for health workers, according to a joint statement.

More than 50 groups, including the AMA, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American College of Physicians (ACP), signed a letter stating that COVID-19 vaccination is “the logical fulfillment of the ethical obligation of all employees at the Health care is, patients as and residents of long-term care facilities and take all necessary steps to ensure their health and well-being. “

“The vaccination against COVID-19 is an essential part of this obligation” Ezekiel Emanuel, MD, PhD, Vice-trial for global initiatives at the University of Pennsylvania, according to an ACP press release. “Employers’ vaccination regulations are effective and life-saving, and they are particularly useful in healthcare and long-term care.”

Several groups that signed the letter had previously called for the COVID-19 vaccination to be a “condition of employment” for health workers, including the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America.

Many hospital systems have already mandated a COVID-19 vaccination for employees and this trend continued after the new letter was released. In particular, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs announced on Monday that medical workers working in Veterans Health Administration facilities would be required to be vaccinated against COVID-19, citing the endorsement of such mandates by medical organizations.

According to the ACP countries, almost a quarter of hospital workers had not been vaccinated by the end of May. If implemented, the vaccine mandate would include approximately 17 million healthcare workers, it said.

AKP President George M. Abraham, MD, MPH, FACP, said in the press release that vaccine mandates will help protect people “as the number of cases, hospitalizations and deaths from the COVID-19 delta variant, particularly among those who have not been vaccinated, continues to rise”.

“No patient should have to worry about being infected from one of their care providers, and no provider should put their patient at risk,” said Emanuel.

It’s been a long time since hospital administrations had the courage to make COVID-19 vaccines a condition of employment for medical workers. Healthcare workers should be kept to a higher standard based on their knowledge and first-hand experience with COVID-19. I believe it is a neglect of their role in opposing the COVID-19 vaccination, speaking of their ability to process data and understand science, as well as their intellectual honesty (given the circumvention required to make the vaccines as a health care worker). This is a fight worth fighting, and when people quit or the nurses unions go on strike, so be it. Hospitals should also be able to give vaccinated staff a pin or badge so that patients know which of their caregivers are vaccinated and which are not.
