About 2 in 5 American adults are now fully vaccinated against Covid-19, data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows, as the rate of new coronavirus infections continues to decline.

In the US, an average of 2.4 million vaccinations per day were reported last week, up from a high of 3.4 million daily vaccinations on April 13.

The rate of new infections is also falling. The country reports an average of 49,000 cases a day, compared with more than 70,000 a few weeks ago, according to Johns Hopkins University.

US vaccine shots administered

About 2.1 million vaccines were reported on Sunday, which translates to a seven-day average of 2.4 million per day.

Satisfying the demand for shots is no longer the main challenge in many places as states face vaccine access and reluctant barriers among their populations. According to a CNBC analysis of the CDC data, 17 states have reported a decrease in shots fired for three consecutive weeks or more.

US percentage of the vaccinated population

Almost 45% of Americans have received at least one dose of vaccine, and 32% are fully vaccinated.

Of those over 18 years of age, 56% are at least partially vaccinated and 40% are fully vaccinated.

“We’re not all going to get vaccinated,” said former Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb, across from CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Monday.

“If we vaccinate two-thirds of the population, or a little better, that’s pretty good protection,” he said.

US Covid cases

According to Hopkins data, the rate of new infections has dropped to its lowest level in months. Over the weekend, the 7-day average daily new cases in the US fell below 50,000 for the first time since October.

Daily new cases are down 5% or more in 22 states and the District of Columbia over the past week. According to CDC data, new admissions of Covid patients to hospitals are also falling.

In other countries, Covid outbreaks are reaching new heights. India is responsible for every third new coronavirus case worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. Almost 7 million cases were reported in April.

US Covid deaths

The US reports an average of 683 Covid deaths per day, according to Hopkins data.
