Cognitive Remediation Beneficial For People With Schizophrenia
According to a recent analysis published in JAMA Psychiatry, cognitive recognition helps improve cognitive awareness and function in people with schizophrenia.
Despite the benefits of behavioral cognitive recognition training in improving cognition, the industry remains reluctant to incorporate training into treatment, the researchers said.
Researchers performed a systematic review and meta-analysis using the PubMed, Scopus, and PsycInfo databases. They looked for studies published between 2011 and 2020. The analysis included 130 studies with 146 comparisons of cognitive recognition with a total of 8,851 participants.

The researchers found an “overall positive” influence of cognitive recognition on function and cognition. The researchers found a small effect of cognitive recognition on the primary outcomes (global cognition: d, 0.29 [95% CI, 0.24-0.34];; P <0.001; 135 comparisons; global functioning: d, 0.22 [95% CI, 0.16-0.29];; P <0.001; 95 comparisons). Fewer years of education and a lower IQ were associated with greater improvements.
Although there was a significant asymmetry in the funnel diagram for global functioning, it is possible that this observation can be explained better by clinical and methodological heterogeneity between included studies than by publication bias. Researchers also limited their search to studies published in English, which may have skewed the publication.
“These results form a solid basis for the consistent inclusion of cognitive recognition in national and international treatment recommendations,” the researchers concluded.
“It is an evidence-based treatment with the potential to be introduced as an element of standard care rather than an optional intervention for select individuals. Since pharmacological treatment has limited effects on cognitive deficits and clinical remission does not necessarily lead to functional recovery, the widespread implementation of cognitive recognition could play a critical role in the achievement of the patient’s personal recovery goals. “
Information: One author said he received grants from the National Institute for Health Research while conducting the study and is the inventor of CIRCuiTs, cognitive correction software.
