Adventist Health’s bariatric surgery program is accredited as a Low Acuity Center

April 26 – According to the facility’s director of bariatric surgery, Dr. Arturo Garcia, Adventist Health / Rideout’s Bariatric Surgery Program has been accredited by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program as a center of low visual acuity.

“Our passion is to provide excellent care so that our patients can lead healthier and longer lives,” Garcia said in a press release. “This accreditation is a gratifying confirmation that our commitment to high quality standards is being achieved. When patients choose us for weight loss surgery, they can be assured that they will receive the great care they deserve.”

The Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) is a joint quality program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

MBSAQIP standards, optimal resources for metabolic and bariatric surgery, ensure that metabolic and bariatric patients receive multidisciplinary medical care that improves patient outcomes and long-term success.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that obesity affects approximately 93 million adults in the United States, and that number is growing.

The disease of obesity increases the risk of morbidity and mortality due to the diseases and conditions commonly associated with it, such as type II diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and cancer, among other health risks. This emerges from a press release. Metabolic and bariatric surgery has been shown to be effective in reducing comorbid conditions associated with obesity.

MBSAQIP accredited centers provide preoperative and postoperative care specifically for obese patients and must meet key staff, training, facility infrastructure and patient care pathways to ensure they can support obese patients in order to receive accreditation.

The story goes on

The center also participates in a national data register that produces biannual reports on the

Quality of surgical results and identification of opportunities for quality improvement.

After applying for MBSAQIP accreditation, the centers will also be visited by an experienced on-site bariatric surgeon who will review the structure, processes, and data of the center’s clinical outcomes.

Centers that receive accreditation are awarded a certain level of accolade based on the number of patients cared for annually, critical care skills, types of procedures provided, and care for patients under the age of 18.

Adventist Health / Rideout’s Garcia-led bariatric surgery program offers whole-person assessment and support for patients as well as two minimally invasive surgical techniques, gastric bypass and vertical sleeve gastrectomy.

“Adventist Health and Rideout is committed to providing the Yuba-Sutter area with high quality care and advanced techniques provided by qualified, compassionate providers,” said Rick Rawson, president of Adventist Health and Rideout, in a press release. “I’m proud of our bariatric surgery program to achieve this rigorous accreditation. You are a great example of the improvements we make every day to better serve our community.”
