30% of hospital health care workers are unvaccinated

HealthDay News – A significant proportion of hospital staff (HCP) remain unvaccinated against COVID-19, according to a study published online Nov. 17 in the American Journal of Infection Control.

Hannah M. Reses, MPH, of the COVID-19 Response Team at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and colleagues analyzed data on COVID-19 vaccination among hospital HCPs that were reported to the U.S. Department of Health Unified Hospital Data Surveillance System.

The researchers found that among 3,357,348 HCPs from 2,086 hospitals included in the analysis, COVID-19 vaccination coverage was 36.1 percent in January 2021, increased to 60.2 percent in April 2021, and then slowed down and on April 25, 2021 August 2021 reached 66.7 percent. As of September 15, 2021, 70.0 percent of HCPs were fully vaccinated. The vaccination rate for HCPs was highest in children’s hospitals, followed by those in short-term acute hospitals, long-term acute hospitals and hospitals with critical access (77.0, 70.1, 68.8 and 64.0 percent, respectively). Coverage rates for COVID-19 were higher among HCPs who worked in facilities in metropolitan areas, followed by those who worked in facilities in rural counties and non-urban counties (71.0, 65.1 and 63.3 percent, respectively ).

“Our analysis has shown that the vaccination rate at US hospitals in hospitals has stalled significantly after initial admission,” Reses said in a statement. “Now additional efforts are needed to improve HCP vaccine coverage and reduce the risk of spreading Coronavirus 2, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, to patients and other hospital staff.”
