The FDA has granted emergency approval for Abbott’s BinaxNOW COVID-19 Ag Card rapid antigen test for the home, the company said.
The test costs $ 25 and gives results in 15 minutes, the company said. It’s the cheapest COVID-19 test to use at home right now, according to Abbott.
It is available on prescription for patients suspected of having COVID-19 within the first 7 days of symptoms appearing in COVID-19 and must be used under the supervision of a telemedicine proctor. It is approved for home use by self-collection in patients aged 15 and over or via nasal swab samples collected from adults from individuals aged 4 and over.
“With the development of the pandemic, the need for rapid tests has increased. Unfortunately, we still hear that many people cannot access tests as quickly as they need, ”said Abbott President and CEO Robert B. Ford, said in a press release.
Test results can be accessed through the Abbott NAVICA app. According to the press release, Abbott expects to run approximately 30 million and 90 million BinaxNOW tests, respectively, in the first and second quarters of 2021.
The FDA approved the first over-the-counter COVID-19 test this week.
