The FDA has approved a longer cooling time for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. This change is intended to help make the vaccine more available.

The FDA said undiluted, thawed vials of the vaccine can be stored in refrigerated temperatures for up to 1 month. So far they could only be stored for up to 5 days.

“The wide availability of COVID-19 vaccines is key to getting people vaccinated and ending the pandemic.” Peter Marks, MD, PhD, The director of the FDA Center for Evaluation and Research of Biologics said in a statement.

According to Marks, Pfizer submitted data to the FDA to support the longer shelf life.

“This change should make the vaccine more widely available to the American public by allowing vaccine providers such as doctor’s offices to obtain, store, and deliver the vaccine,” he said.

The vaccine is now approved for people 12 years and over.

The FDA has updated its fact sheet for healthcare providers who deliver vaccines to reflect the new guidelines for refrigeration.
