Southlake’s FlyKids Yoga business owner fostering health, wellness in children

Life coach and soon-to-be-published author Danielle Vaughn opened the FlyKids Yoga Studio in Southlake in 2016.

The inspiration to open the FlyKids Yoga Studio came to Danielle Vaughn almost eight years ago while riding with her children. When their two younger daughters were arguing, Vaughn noticed their eldest Sophia in a sleep-like state and asked what she was doing.

“Mama, I find my peace,” replied Sophia.

Sophia had seen her mother practice yoga at home and tried to imitate the meditative practice.

“I was like, ‘What if I could give this to my kids before they get separated from their inner voice?'” Vaughn said. “I went to one [yoga] Training. I started teaching my children and their friends came. “

Vaughn initially taught from home, but her classes quickly filled up as interest grew. Fast forward to September 2016, when FlyKids Yoga opened its doors in Southlake for the first time and looked after children and teenagers between the ages of 4 and 18 with age-group classes. Students begin the class by sharing their feelings and goals they want to achieve in class, Vaughn said.

Games, singing, and dancing are part of younger children’s lessons, and students are encouraged to use their imaginations to pretend they’re going on adventures. Instructors can also place children in a special needs class.

FlyKids also runs an apprenticeship program where kids 12 and older can get more in-depth training on yoga and help younger students and summer camps.

The lessons taught at FlyKids promote emotional well-being and train students to breathe properly, improve posture, and develop positive affirmations to help filter out negative thoughts, Vaughn said.

Children also have a different approach to yoga – without fear, she said. They openly take the chance to be creative and do their own poses.

“That’s the cool thing about kids,” she said. “You don’t have much judgment yet. They are not yet as self-critical as adults, so I wanted a children’s yoga studio. … they are natural yogis. “
