Rigorous rest can slow recovery from an exercise-related concussion

Subjects ” traumatic brain injury

HealthDay News – Rigorous rest can slow recovery and prolong symptoms after a sports-related concussion (SRC), according to a consensus statement published online June 15 in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

Stanley Herring, MD, of the University of Washington at Seattle, and colleagues developed a Team Physician Consensus Conference statement to cover selected SRC topics that are relevant to practicing team physicians.

According to the statement, the diagnosis of SRC remains a challenge due to unspecific symptoms and a lack of objective biomarkers. SRC is treatable, with the number and severity of initial symptom burden being the best predictors of recovery time. Current evidence suggests that strict rest after SRC can slow recovery and increase the likelihood of persistent symptoms. The typical recovery period for most athletes with SRC is two weeks and up to four weeks for adults and children, respectively. Persistent symptoms according to SRC (PSaSRC) are defined as symptoms that last longer than the typical time frame; the underlying pathophysiology is not fully understood. It is believed that PSaSRC are not caused by a single pathological process, but rather by an interaction of post-traumatic symptoms complicated by pre-existing, co-existing, and / or resulting biopsychosocial factors. A multidisciplinary approach is often required to manage the disabling PSaSRC.
