The digital health platform Zyter announced that a HIPAA-compliant, cloud-based telemedicine solution is now available that doctors can use to conduct their hospital rounds virtually.

According to a press release, doctors can purchase Zyter Virtual Rounding (Zyter) through a browser on any digital iOS or Android tablet or mobile device with a cellular or internet connection. The patient, care team, and the patient’s family members will all receive a notification of the virtual visit via email or SMS so they can connect and participate. The tool can be integrated into electronic patient files to enable real-time access to patient data.

This technology “changes the game because doctors and others can see not only the patient, but every detail of that patient’s medical record during a video chat call.” Sanjay Govil, Founder and CEO of Zyter, said in the press release. “Bringing in more data can increase the quality of care during virtual rounds because doctors have a complete, holistic view of their patients and conditions.”

The press release also states that by minimizing the number of people in patient rooms, Zyter Virtual Rounding could reduce the amount of personal protective equipment healthcare systems require. The tool can also be integrated with home visits and patient device monitoring.

There will be times when technologies like Zyter Virtual Rounding add value. For example, for patients with various illnesses who cannot be transported to a doctor’s office or hospital, who want to take their family members with them during the visit or who we cannot reach by phone.

Telehealth can also reduce situations where the doctor is staring at the computer rather than interacting with the patient during a personal visit.

However, it can be distracting to see too many things on during video conferencing. I myself sometimes find it difficult to resist the urge to multitask. Technologies like Zyter Virtual Rounding can be inadvertently misused in this way.
