Nearly 80% of teachers, school staff and childcare workers have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, according to the CDC.

“This is a great step forward in protecting our educators, our essential collaborators,” said the president Joe Biden said during a speech on Tuesday.

Biden had previously directed states to give teachers, school staff and childcare workers priority over vaccinations. According to the CDC, more than 2 million of them were vaccinated through the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program, in addition to at least 5 million who were vaccinated through government programs.

Rochelle P. Walensky

“Our efforts to ensure teachers, school staff and childcare workers were vaccinated in March paid off and paved the way for safer face-to-face learning,” said CDC director Rochelle P. Walensky, MD, MPHsaid in a statement. “CDC will build on the success of this program and work with our partners to expand our vaccination efforts as we work to ensure confidence in COVID-19 vaccines.”

The CDC previously said that teachers do not need to be vaccinated in order for schools to be open.

One of the largest teachers’ unions in the country also reported that around 80% of teachers had been vaccinated and 85% said their schools were back up at least part-time.

“Educators roll up their sleeves not only to get vaccinated, but to return to personal school with the CDC safety rails,” said the President of the American Federation of Teachers Randi Weingarten said in a statement.
