Merck will assist in the manufacture of Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine as part of a federal government-sponsored partnership, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki confirmed during a press conference on Tuesday.

Describing the collaboration as an “unprecedented historic step,” Psaki said the Defense Manufacturing Act will go into effect to equip two Merck facilities with the equipment needed to manufacture the vaccine, in line with the Biden government’s earlier promise of bottlenecks in the vaccine supply with a “wartime” fix effort. “

The Department of Defense will provide logistical support in the hope of expanding vaccine production to increase Johnson & Johnson’s fill / end capacity for the single-dose vaccine recently approved by the FDA for emergency use.

“These are two companies that have been competitors in the past. The fact that they are coming together speaks to this government’s ability to bring them to the table and work together to fight the pandemic,” said Psaki.

The White House announced Monday that distribution of the first 3.9 million doses of Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine had begun. A Johnson & Johnson executive said last week that the company continues to expect to ship 100 million cans by the end of June.

Psaki noted that the collaboration between the two companies will ensure Johnson & Johnson can expedite its vaccine manufacturing process, which is “good news for the American people.”
