Longer reproductive windows could increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease

Subjects ” Alzheimer’s and dementia

HealthDay News – According to a study published online July 2 in menopause, longer reproductive times in women is linked to biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease (AD).

Jenna Najar, MD, of the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, and colleagues examined the relationship between reproductive period (age at menarche to age at menopause) and levels of cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers for AD. The analysis included 75 women who were followed from 1968 to 1994.

The researchers found that longer reproductive times were associated with lower amyloid-β (Aβ) 42, higher P-tau levels, and a lower Aβ42 / Aβ40 ratio. No association with T-tau was observed. In particular, earlier menstrual age was associated with higher P-tau levels and a lower Aβ42 / Aβ40 ratio, but no similar associations were observed for Aβ42 and T-tau. In addition, no associations were observed between age at menopause and markers for AD.

“This small population-based study showed an association between reproductive life span (a surrogate marker for exposure to endogenous estrogen) and CSF biomarkers of Alzheimer’s disease in women without dementia,” Stephanie Faubion, MD, medical director of the North American Menopause Society said in a statement. “This finding needs to be confirmed in larger studies, but it can be another factor that contributes to the increased burden of Alzheimer’s disease in women, which is at least partially likely to be related to aging and the higher life expectancy of women compared to men.”

Two authors disclosed financial ties to the biopharmaceutical industry.
