Because of the wide field, I was always interested in infectious diseases.

This interest peaked during the stay. Our program has been busy with many seriously ill and complex patients. During my internship training, I found that many critically ill patients are exposed to a wide and varied range of antimicrobial agents, often with no proven infection. These are patients who are seriously ill, difficult to manage, and at high risk for nosocomial and other infections.

This got me interested in the antimicrobial agent field and then diagnostic administration, which I was able to expand during my fellowship training at the Mayo Clinic. Antimicrobial agents are a limited resource, the non-harmful use of which results in antibiotic resistance. This problem already results in about 35,000 deaths and 3 million cases per year, with Clostridioides difficile causing about 12,000 deaths and 200,000 cases per year in the US. Therefore, antibiotic resistance, stewardship and diagnostic stewardship are my main interests in the field of infectious diseases. Coupled with the wide range of topics – including orthopedic infections, immunocompromised host infections, cardiovascular infections, tropical and travel-related infections, common infectious diseases, and HIV – this offers a wide range of complex clinical and research practices. As the current pandemic shows, infectious diseases have far-reaching implications for public health.
