Data suggests that around 20% of people in the US had a sexually transmitted infection at some point in 2018, with nearly half of new infections occurring in people between the ages of 15 and 24, CDC researchers reported.

“Proven STI prevention – at all levels – is a cornerstone of protecting the health, economic security and wellbeing of America.” Raul A. Romaguera, DMD, MPH, A press release states the acting director of the CDC’s department for STD prevention. “There are significant human and financial costs associated with these infections, and we know from other studies that cuts in STI prevention efforts later lead to higher costs. Preventing sexually transmitted diseases could save billions in medical costs. More importantly, however, prevention would improve the health and lives of millions of people. “

CDC researchers estimated the incidence and incidence of gonorrhea, chlamydia, trichomoniasis, genital herpes, syphilis, HPV, sexually transmitted hepatitis B virus, and sexually transmitted HIV.

It is estimated that there were around 68 million STIs in 2018 – roughly a fifth of the total population of over 320 million – and around 26 million STIs. Additionally, 45.5% of the STIs were in people ages 15 to 24, the researchers reported.

A cost analysis found that STIs generated an estimated $ 16 billion in lifetime medical costs in 2018, of which HIV accounted for $ 13.7 billion. In addition, $ 755 million in medical costs was spent on HPV and more than $ 1 billion on syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia. About 60% of the total costs for syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia were in people aged 15 to 24.

“The exposure to sexually transmitted diseases is staggering” Jonathan Mermin, MD, MPH, The director of the National Center for HIV / AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, Sexually Transmitted Diseases and TB Prevention of the CDC said in the press release. “At a time when STIs are at an all-time high, they have dropped out of the national conversation. However, STIs are a preventable and treatable national health threat with significant personal and economic implications. There is an urgent need to reverse the trend of increasing STIs, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic that is affecting many STI prevention services. “

The high proportion of sexually transmitted diseases continues to be alarming and leads not only to a high burden of morbidity, but also to an economic burden on the health system. I think infectious disease professionals and other professionals cut out our work for us. We must not lose our focus on the need to redouble our efforts to prevent, detect and treat sexually transmitted diseases, even as we continue to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.
