The AMA has updated the CPT code set to include immunization and administration codes specific to the AstraZeneca and Oxford University COVID-19 vaccine.

The codes take effect immediately upon approval or approval for emergency use (EUA) by the FDA, according to the AMA.

In a press release, the AMA said that the CPT Category I code and long descriptor for the vaccine from AstraZeneca and Oxford University are as follows:

  • 91302: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) Vaccine, DNA, spike protein, chimpanzee adenovirus Oxford-1 (ChAdOx1) vector, preservative-free, 5 × 10 10 virus particles / 0.5 ml dosage, for intramuscular use

The administration codes and long descriptors for administering the vaccine and any necessary advice to the patient or caregiver and for updating the electronic record are as follows:

  • 0021A: Immunization administration by intramuscular injection of coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) with severe acute respiratory syndrome (coronavirus disease) [COVID-19]) Vaccine, DNA, spike protein, chimpanzee adenovirus Oxford 1 (ChAdOx1) vector, preservative-free, 5 × 10 10 virus particles / 0.5 ml dosage; first dose
  • 0022A; second dose

Last month, AMA announced CPT codes specific to the COVID-19 vaccines developed by Pfizer and Moderna. The Pfizer vaccine was granted an EEA and an advisory committee recommended an EEA for Moderna’s vaccine late yesterday.

“The ability to correlate each COVID-19 vaccine with its own CPT code provides analytical and tracking benefits that ensure optimal vaccine distribution and administration, especially for patients who need to complete the two-dose schedule,” said AMA President Susan Bailey, MD, said in the press release.
