Awareness of COVID-19 guidelines is high among young adults with asthma in Mexico, but nearly a third do not adhere to basic preventive measures to contain the spread of infection, researchers reported in the Journal of Asthma.

“Researchers from different countries have shown that the most efficient strategy to reduce the morbidity and mortality from COVID-19 in the general population in their countries was to implement and adhere to some hygiene measures such as washing hands and wearing masks, staying at home and keeping social distance”, wrote Francisco Vázquez-Nava, PhD, with the Faculty of Medicine at the Autonomous University of Tamaulipas in Tampico, Mexico, and colleagues. “However, knowledge of and adherence to these preventive measures in a restrictive sample of asthmatics has not been studied.”

The cross-sectional study included data from 2,372 participants, ages 16 to 24, who completed a questionnaire sent via email and WhatsApp that collected information on sociodemographics and whether they received instructions from health professionals on COVID-19 prevention. The study was conducted April 8-24 in the Tampico-Madero-Altamira region of Mexico.

The prevalence of asthma was 12.2%. Fifty-three percent of participants said they did not follow COVID-19 prevention guidelines.

Overall, 30.8% of asthma patients responded that they are not following basic COVID-19 prevention measures implemented by health authorities, despite being aware of the guidelines and measures to prevent and mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

Male sex, active smoking, and the assumption that COVID-19 is not a more serious illness than others for patients with asthma have been linked to non-compliance with COVID-19 protection guidelines, according to logistic regression analysis.

“Based on the results of this study, men with asthma are 2.11 times more likely than women to fail to follow basic control measures to prevent COVID-19,” the researchers wrote.

According to the researchers, this is in line with previous reports that have shown men are less likely to follow indications and medical treatments to prevent and control complications of their diseases. These results are particularly important as men have the highest prevalence of COVID-19.

“It is important that people with asthma are educated by a healthcare professional during the COVID-19 outbreak of basic precautions to be taken to protect against the disease and the timely use of asthma control drugs,” the researchers write.
